Why is a summer AC failure riskier for older adults?
As we age, the body becomes less able to sense and adjust to heat, and many common medications make it harder to stay cool and hydrated. The CDC lists adults 65 and older among the groups at highest risk of heat-related illness. In a closed-up Florida condo, the indoor temperature can climb quickly once the AC stops. That's why we treat a no-cooling call from an older customer as urgent. While you wait, move to the coolest room, close blinds, drink water and use cool cloths, and don't rely on a fan alone in extreme heat. If someone feels confused, dizzy or stops sweating, call 911.

How do I avoid an AC scam or a pressure sale?
The warning signs are consistent. Be wary of anyone who knocks on your door unannounced, offers a price that's only good "today," asks for full payment upfront, or condemns a system without showing you the failed part. A legitimate contractor will give you a Florida license number you can look up, put the price in writing, and let you get a second opinion. You can verify any HVAC license on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website. Ours is CAC1824175. Families helping a parent should ask for the diagnosis and quote in writing, so everyone can review it before anything is signed.
